The right to choose the timing and manner of one’s death is favored by about 70% of the U.S. population. Despite this statistic, there remain significant legal and practical roadblocks to achieving what has become known as a “death with dignity”.
It is the mission of the Final Exit Network to “Educate qualified individuals in practical, peaceful ways to end their lives, offer a compassionate bedside presence, and defend their right to choose.”
During this presentation, Wendell Stephenson, Ph.D., President Emeritus pf the Final Exit Network, will teach us about the services provided by this organization, the past and on-going legal challenges and hurdles it is faced by, and where you fit into the picture. His talk will not include any "how to's," just general information
The Final Exit Network was formed after the dissolution of the Hemlock Society in 2003. The Network recognizes the need now for compassionate support and death with dignity education in all states. It addresses the current needs of those who are suffering now, in a very real and personal way.
Wendell Stephenson, Ph.D. is also a member of the Final Exit Network's advisory board. He taught philosophy at various colleges and universities for about 45 years and is now retired from Fresno City College, where he taught ethics, philosophy of religion, social and political philosophy, and critical reasoning. Prof. Stephenson is currently establishing a clinic in Fresno devoted to informing folks about the California law allowing physician-assisted death and enabling them to easily access information to end their lives on their own terms.
