Carmen is one of the world's most popular operas and a staple of the standard operatic repertoire.

It is a French opera by Georges Bizet  based on a novella. A soldier, Don José, falls passionately in love with a gypsy woman, Carmen, and deserts the army to follow a life of crime for her. When she is unfaithful to him, he murders her. Carmen is the supreme incarnation of the femme fatale. Energetic, resourceful, fatalistic and indomitable, she exudes an aura of sexuality, superstition, and malevolence which exerts a deadly charm on Don José. Their relationship leads to the rejection of his former love, a turn to criminal life and the murder of Carmen. The story is set in Spain, circa 1830.

You will view a production  starring Swedish mezzo Anna Sofie von Otter as the seductress Carmen. In addition you will view bonus features illustrating costumes, music and dance. Attendees will receive a 10-page syllabus  including biographies, sources, commentary, analysis and a synopsis.
