Hardly a week passes that someone does not proudly make a claim backed by the triumphant cry, “It’s in the Constitution!” Closer inspection might provide you with the discovery that there is no such provision in our founding document to bolster said claim. At best, there may be a reference but it has been misrepresented.
It is time to cover some of the most often repeated misconceptions of our Constitution. This class will cover the checks and balances and the limitations often conveniently forgotten by the talking heads found on both sides of the political spectrum. We will begin with the curious setting and background of the Constitutional Convention but will spend the majority of the class in discussing the most common misunderstandings about the Constitution. There will be ample time to field questions after the presentation.
The class will be limited to the body of the document. A sequel will be devoted to the better understanding of our amendments.
August 5, 1-3 at the Oddfellows Hall
