Science and religion are two of the most potent forces that have directed, and continue to direct, humankind’s endless quest for understanding. Partisans on both sides have long insisted that the two are inherently antagonistic, and have framed public debate on a conflict model.
This class will explore two famous historic episodes--Galileo’s denunciation by the Roman Catholic Church and the furor over Darwinian evolution--to show how extremists in the faith and reason camps have both distorted and obscured their commonalities. We’ll then propose alternatives to the warfare model, especially independence, dialogue, and integration, as more fruitful ways of advancing both faith and reason.
Rev. Brian Walker is an ordained Unity minister who has a special interest in the relationship between science and religion. Brian also has an MA in education.
