Chris Strodder, author of fifteen books (most of them nonfiction works about movies and pop culture), explores five classic movies from the 1930s to the 1970s in this lively and intriguing class. As he does in his most recent book, What’s Wrong With This Best Picture?, Chris first celebrates each of these great movies, then he analyzes a significant flaw (a big plot hole or a totally illogical event, not some tiny inconsequential error), and finally he proposes a simple solution to fix that flaw without disrupting the rest of the movie. Dozens of movie stills illustrate his talk. You may think you know these five movies—The Wizard of Oz (1939), Casablanca (1942), Cinderella (1950), The Sound of Music (1965), and Superman (1978)—but you’re bound to learn something new and come away with a new appreciation, not just for these but for all classic movies. And just like on a DVD, the presentation ends with some entertaining special features.
July 29, 1-3 p.m. at the Unitarian Church

His books have been named among the ten best nonfiction books of the year by the national Library Journal, they’ve been featured in everything from Playboy to the L.A.
