This talk is based on Dr. Marx’s book of the same title, published in 2000 by Oxford University Press and still in print. This course, as did the book, begins with a discussion of multiple ways, other than doctrinal, that Biblical texts influenced English Renaissance Culture. Specific emphasis will be placed on how the Renaissance was influenced in literary, psychological, dramatic, historical, political, and philosophical ways by the Bible’s writings. From a strictly secular perspective, Dr. Marx will explore ways Shakespeare’s plays make sense of puzzling aspects of the Hebrew Scriptures and the New Testament and ways Biblical books make sense of puzzling aspects of Shakespeare’s plays. Participants should carry away a heightened appreciation of the two most influential books in the Western tradition and an understanding of their illuminating relation to one another.
January 7, 1-3 at the Oddfellows Hall
Dr. Marx earned a PhD in English from Stanford University. He is a Professor of English and Environmental Studies at Cal Poly. He has been awarded both the Distinguished Professor Award and Distinguished Scholar Award for the College of Liberal Arts at Cal Poly.
